Activities
Spel-bound
Every Fall the chapter hosts a “get-to-know” Spelman breakfast called “Spel-bound” for local high school girls interested in attending our alma mater. Students and their parents gain valuable insight from alumnae into the Spelman experience covering everything from admission requirements to college life
Community Outreach Program
The chapter’s ongoing community outreach efforts are rooted in the theme, “Investing in the Lives of Women.” Some of our activities include NJ Dress for Success, tutoring and mentoring teenage girls, a women and finance symposium, and our annual holiday gift drive to benefit local foster care children.
Annual Jazz Ensemble Benefit Concert
In March, the chapter puts on an evening of jazz featuring Spelman’s very own Jazz Ensemble. The concert is our largest fundraiser and its proceeds are contributed to NNJC’s scholarship endowment fund. One of the many concert highlights is our salute to a special guest honoree with the African American Classical Music Award. Previous honorees include Roy Ayers, Nancy Wilson, the Heath Brothers, Cassandra Wilson, Branford Marsalis, and Geri Allen.
Founders Day Celebration
You don’t have to be in Atlanta to celebrate Founder’s Day. We commemorate Spelman’s founding on April 11, 1881, by coming together for a culturally enriching outing such as attending the theater, an art exhibit, or other performance capped off with lunch or dinner.
Pre-Freshman Tea
During the summer, NNJC welcomes newly accepted students who are planning to enter Spelman in the Fall at our annual Pre-Freshman Tea. Current and former students share useful advice and experiences with entering students and their parents. Students have a chance to meet other incoming freshman and engage in candid conversation about campus life and numerous other subjects.
Sisterly Bonding
Every so often, members of the chapter hook up to hang out and just have fun – no business. Past outings include movie screenings, plays, potluck dinners, an Alvin Ailey performance, and bowling. Where we go or what we do doesn’t matter – that it serves as a wonderful opportunity to bond with our sisters is the most important thing.
Scholarship
NNJC’s Scholarship Fund was established in 1976 to provide financial assistance to young women from NJ attending Spelman College. Recipients must possess strong academic credentials and a need for financial assistance. Application information is sent to students once they have confirmed with the college their intent to attend.
